Creating Fall Home Scents – Naturally

Lighting a pumpkin spice or apple pie scented candle is one of nicest ways to fully revel in the fall season.  It instantly adds atmosphere and coziness to any home.  However, did you know that most scented candles are made from paraffin wax, which, when burned, releases highly toxic and carcinogenic chemicals (benzene and toluene) into the air you breathe?  Exposure to these chemicals can cause damage to your brain, central nervous system and lungs, as well as contribute to stunted development.  Thankfully, there are several ways to bring the scents of fall into your home – naturally! – without the risks of burning paraffin candles.  Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Light a 100% soy based candle – these candles are non-toxic and widely available, making them a great alternative to traditional scented candles. I’m loving these Spiked Apple Cider and Pumpkin
  2. The awesome Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day line of non-toxic cleaning products just introduced a line of fall scents, so now your entire home can smell like apple cider or fresh mums all season long while keeping everything squeaky clean (win win!).
  3. Essential Oils are all the rage right now, so diffusing a few autumn scented varieties is another safe way to bring the scents of autumn into your home. My favorite fall scents are cinnamon, clove, sweet orange, vanilla, and sandalwood – diffuse single oils or mix and match to create your favorite blend!
  4. Create a simmer pot full of seasonal scents. It doesn’t get any more natural than this: fill a large saucepan with water, and bring to a simmer.  Add a sliced apple, a sliced orange, a large pinch of whole cloves, and 3-4 whole cinnamon sticks.  As the mixture simmers away, your entire home will be filled with the scents of autumn!
